Budgets, versions and control
Two limits keep an agent's spend in bounds: a budget for each run and a monthly cap on its key. A live agent only changes when you apply a version that passed its test. You can pause it at any time.
The per-run budget
Every plan has a Budget row: “Up to N credits a run”. The builder fills in a starting budget for each kind of agent. Change it in words, for example “Keep each run under 150 credits”.
- A run counts every call it makes, data and model alike.
- The call that would take a run over its budget is refused with run_budget_exceeded, and the run stops.
- In Layrcake the budget always holds. In Claude Code, Codex or n8n it holds when the calls carry the run's id (see Runs outside Layrcake).
- Choosing Claude Opus 5.5 doubles the suggested budget, and choosing back halves it.
For an agent that runs in Layrcake, Go live shows its monthly ceiling: the budget times the runs its schedule makes in 30 days. If the budget is below one typical run, Go live warns you, because its runs may stop before they finish.
The monthly cap and “At cap”
An agent's key can carry a monthly spend cap, set on the Keys page like any key's. It counts what that key spends in the calendar month.
Once it is reached, the agent's card shows At cap: “At its monthly cap: paid calls are refused until the month turns or a person raises the cap on the Keys page.”
Any member can lower a cap. Only a signed-in owner can raise one, in the console. See Restrict for the rules on every key.
Versions
Every change to a plan is a new version. A live agent keeps running its last tested version until you apply a newer one that passed a test. Editing never changes what is running.
- Open the live agent in the builder and change the plan, in words or with Change. The footer says “Version N waiting”.
- Test the new version. Nothing is sent.
- When it passes, choose Apply version N. The agent runs it from then on.
Runs already going finish on the version they started with. Apply is refused if the newest version has no passing test, or if the plan changed again since: test the newest version, then apply that.
Pause and resume
Choose Pause on the agent's card. Nothing it has queued will send until you resume it. Replies still come in.
- Its key is refused on its next call with agent_paused, wherever it runs.
- A run in Layrcake stops, and its schedule doesn't start new runs.
- Its plan, tests and record stay as they were.
Choose Resume to turn it back on. It runs the same version as before.
Remove and retire
Remove draft takes a draft off your agents list. It never went live, so nothing was sent and it has no key. Its plan and test results stay in the record.
Retiring a live agent from the Agents page is COMING. Until then, pause it: a paused agent can't spend or send.
